Somerset Business Partnership Annual Meeting Sets Record

Yesterday's Somerset County Business Partnership Annual Meeting set a new attendance record and featured an address by NJ Economic Development Authority Executive Director Caren Franzini.  Article here, and picture with your humble blogger lurking in the background.

Frank Steinberg Finishes Two Year Term as Business Partnership Chair

Today I wrapped up two years as Chairman of the Board of the Somerset County Business Partnership, at the Partnership's Annual Meeting.  SCBP is a public-private partnership of the business, non-profit, and government communities that focuses on enhancing the business climate and quality of life in Somerset County, New Jersey.  It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this highly effective organization.  My thanks to CEO Mike Kerwin and his staff, and especially to the many volunteers who keep the Partnership at the forefront of the discussion of public issues in the great Garden State.

Steinberg Law Gets A New Look!

With the help of our good friends at Lexblog, both our website and the NJ Employment Law Blog have a fresh new look.  The website overhaul was long overdue, and the graphics on the blog were getting a bit long in the tooth, too.

I'm particularly fond of the new graphics, which give me the feeling of looking out from the inside of a seashell.  And for a Jersey boy who has spent virtually every summer of his life at the shore, that's a nice feeling to have year around.

There's new content on the website, and we'll be adding to it regularly.  And, of course, our blog will keep you up to date on what you need to know to navigate the often treacherous waters of employment law in the Garden State.

So take a look around, subscribe to the blog if you haven't done so already, and let us know what you think.  As always, we promise to keep it light, useful, and worth your time.

NJ Employment Law Blog Honored

We're thrilled that the New Jersey Employment Law Blog has again been named one of the top 100 employment  law blogs.  The top 100 list is published annually by the Delaware Employment Law Blog, a terrific publication in its own right.  You'll find the rankings here

One of the things that blogging on employment law teaches you is that the law that regulates the employment relationship continues to develop and expand at a staggering pace.  New cases, new laws, new regulations . . . reinterpretations of what we thought was settled law . . . it just goes on and on.  My fellow bloggers perform an important public service by helping us all keep track of everything that is going on.  It would, quite frankly, be impossible for any of us acting alone, and in this collaboration we see one the ways that bloggers provide an invaluable public service to the legal and business communities.

And thanks again to Molly DiBianca of the Delaware Employment Law Blog for her hard work in keeping track of (and hopefully making some sense out of) all of us in the employment law corner of the blogosphere.

Frank Steinberg Elected to Second Term

Frank Steinberg has been reelected to a second consecutive term as Chair of the Somerset County Business Partnership.  Local coverage of the event is here.

Over the past year the Business Partnership has increased its membership to more than 650.  As always, the membership runs a broad gamut from Fortune 50 companies to small local business and professional practices.

The Partnership has taken a leading role statewide in advocating for a more favorable business climate and quality of life in New Jersey, most notably through its year-long Affordability Campaign.  In 2011 the advocacy focus will shift to (among other things) a Competitiveness Initiative designed to improve New Jersey's business, tax and regulatory environment relative to other states in the Northeast.

The Business Partnership remains a terrific organization that is only getting better.  If your business is located in central New Jersey, it's worth a look.

My Appearance on Caucus NJ

About a month ago I told you that I had taped a television panel discussion on Cancer in the Workplace, focusing on disability issues. Hosted by the award-winning Steve Adubato, our segment of Caucus NJ has now aired and is running on a couple of stations.  For most of you the easiest access will be on the New Jersey Network.

If you don't feel like waiting for it on TV, you can watch online here.

By the way, Steve is a very polished host and had a great way of swinging the conversation around the room to the different panelists, integrating our various areas of expertise.

I was a bit under the weather on taping day so I don't sound like myself, but I had a terrific discussion with some great people.  I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Steinberg Installed as Business Partnership Chair

Frank Steinberg of Steinberg Law Offices was installed on December 9 as chairman of the Somerset County Business Partnership.   His term will be for one year.  The Business Partnership has more than 600 member companies that range from the Fortune 500, to national and regional banks, small family businesses and professional practices.  The Business Partnership is the only certified Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey, and is well-known among local, county, state and federal lawmakers for its effective advocacy of public policy initiatives.  It is also an acknowledged authority in advocating for collaborative action among governmental units.

While you're at it, take a look at the Partnership's web site.  It's a terrific organization and one that I'm proud to be associated with.

Speaking Engagement - Were the Experts Stumped?

Frank Steinberg recently participated in a "Stump the Experts" forum for the Somerset County Business Partnership.  The free-form discussion saw a panel of experts fielding questions from the audience.  Frank's presentation focused on employment law and business law issues.

The accountant on the panel was Doug Sonier of Withum, Smith & Brown.  Laurie Murphy of People Are Key, Inc. spoke about HR issues.

All of the panelists, I am happy to report, escaped more or less unscathed.

NJ Employment Law Blog in the News

Legal bloggers recently caught the attention of the Newark Star-Ledger, and we're proud to say that NJ Employment Law Blog was one of the blogs featured in the article.  We hope that you'll take a minute or two to read about what we're doing.  More than that, though, we hope that you're coming to appreciate the free resources that legal blogs put at your fingertips.  There are legal blogs on many legal topics, and the number of subjects covered is growing rapidly.  (Don't believe me?  Check out the blog roll on the right side of the screen.)  If nothing else, blogs will alert you to developments that affect you and your business.  And with that information, you'll be in a position to ask the right questions of your advisors, and avoid problems and expense.
